Chamba Filling Station, Diskit, Nubra Valley, Ladakh This was one of the most important stops during our Ladakh road trip in August 2021. Located in Diskit, this petrol pump was the only official fuel station in Nubra Valley at the time, making it an essential stop for anyone travelling deeper into the valley or heading towards remote areas such as Turtuk and Pangong. What makes this place memorable is its setting. It is not your usual petrol pump. You are literally refuelling with the dramatic, barren mountains of the Himalayas surrounding you. The contrast between the simple fuel station and the enormous mountain landscape makes for a surprisingly beautiful sight. The pump is known as Chamba Filling Station and is located in Diskit, the administrative headquarters of Nubra Valley. Nubra has historically been an important corridor of the Silk Route, with caravans passing through the valley towards Central Asia. For travellers, this was more than just a fuel stop. Fuel planning was an important part of travelling through Ladakh because of the long stretches between reliable fuel stations. We made sure to top up here before continuing our journey towards Pangong. Today, the fuel network in Ladakh has expanded, but when I visited in August 2021, this was a particularly important refuelling point for the Nubra Valley route. Stopped here to refuel on my way to Nubra Valley, and this HP Retail Outlet is perfectly and strategically located with stunning views overlooking the Himalayan range. The facility is very well-managed, and the service is excellent—it was great to see the owner actively on-site, ensuring everything runs smoothly. The washrooms were notably clean, which is always a plus on this route. We also stopped at their cafe adjacent to the Petrol Pump, "The Barley," for some snacks, which were great. I highly recommend this stop to any tourists traveling to Nubra Valley—it’s the perfect place to refuel your vehicle or take a relaxing tea/coffee break.
